Jared Ropelato, a 12 year old boy, got lost in the Utah Ashley National Forest and was completely alone for nearly 24 hours. Having been a boy scout for a few years, he recalled a skill he learned just the year before, about how to build a shelter and keep warm.
Temperatures were around 31 degrees that night, and had he not had proper knowledge about what to do, he could have easily died of hypothermia.
Jared was able to construct a 'lean-to' shelter, which involves leaning large branches against a tree or backdrop of some sort. In addition, he covered himself in dirt to provide insulation. Jared was only wearing a t shirt and a pair of pants. It is very fortunate he was able to get out of this alive.
At one point while he was lost, Jared encountered a bull moose. Jared stayed calm, and slowly avoided the moose without startling it and was able to get away with no harm.
Eventually, a 200 person search team was able to find Jared only a few miles away from camp, and returned him safely in good health.
