Coghlans Magnesium Fire Starter
A must have fire starting tool for every outdoor trip. The fire starter uses magnesium, a flame source of 5400°F (2982°C). One magnesium fire starter should provide sufficient shavings to start hundreds of fires. Easy to use and durable. Remember, survival experts agree that you should always have at least two forms of fire starting with you. Don't get caught unprepared!
Fire Starter Instructions:
1.Pare a small pile of magnesium shavings (at least enough to cover a quarter). Use a sharp knife held at 90 degrees to the magnesium block to provide easy shaving.
2. Gather tinder (twigs, leaves, paper, or one of out tinders) in a pile adjoining the magnesium shavings.
3. Hold the fire starter with the sparking insert up at about a 45 degree angle withing 2.5 cm of the shavings.
4. Scrape the length of the starter using the back (spine) of the knife creating sparks which will ignite the magnesium shavings.
5. The magnesium shavings will burn rapidly but the extreme heat will ignite even damp (not wet) tinder. Be prepared to add additional fuel to build and maintain an adequate fire.
CAUTION: Magnesium in solid form is safe and is not combustible. Do not pare shaving before they are needed. Also, the user of this product assumes all risk in use of this product.
The thing about magnesium fire starters that most other fire starting tools can't offer is that not only do they provide a spark, but they also provide to some degree a source of tinder, using the magnesium shavings.
This tool is manufactured by Coghlans.
